Mary had given birth to eight children and eight were still living and at home: Charly [or Charty/Charity?], daughter, 17, born Mar 1883; Thursy, 14, born May 1886; Mary S., 11, born Oct 1888; Laura B., 9, born May 1891; Virgie S., 7; born May 1893; James H., 5, born Mar 1895; Elijah, 3, born Aug 1896; and Nancy J., 7 months, born Oct 1899. All household members and their parents were born in Kentucky. James was a farmer on his own farm. James and Mary could read, but not write. No other household members could read or write.
